One Love – Raising Money For Caribbean Hurricane Aid

Update on our recent fundraiser for the British Red Cross Hurricane Appeal. Energi People work with candidates and clients in the Caribbean and have seen first hand the devastation caused.

At the beginning of this month we hosted our fundraising event for the British Red Cross’ Hurricane Appeal; raising money to deliver critical aid to those affected by the series of catastrophic hurricanes experienced by the Caribbean Islands this autumn.

Just days before our One Love event, I returned from a business trip to the region where I witnessed first hand the destruction caused. The photos below provide just a snapshot of some of the damage I saw. I also spoke to many people who were in the region at the time – local residents and contractors working in the Caribbean – and this brought home to me the impact of a natural disaster on each individual’s lives. It’s not just about buildings and infrastructure being ripped apart, it’s also about the grief and fear, insecurity around housing and jobs, and living hand to mouth with only basic supplies.

After my trip I was even more motivated to make our evening a great success. With a target amount of £2,000 to raise, we had a tough job of persuading people to ditch the fireworks (there were lots of Bonfire Night displays competing with us) and come down for reggae, dancing and Caribbean food.

Fortunately, people didn’t need that much persuading and we had a great night with Energi People staff, their families and friends, as well as people from the local community coming out in support. The evening was a great success but couldn’t have happened without some key people… So here’s my chance to say thank you officially to the following wonderful, generous people:

Alex Christie – Director at Energi People for funding the hall and food, and for allowing me time to organise the event during working hours!

Glen Kane – DJ and Kane FM for organising the DJing on the night and for promoting the event on radio and social media.

I-JAY & tHe ACOUStiC MesseNjAz – our live musicians on the night, who brought the Caribbean to Mytchett, donated their time and also CDs for our raffle.

Wilf Robinson – the chef who kept everyone well fed with his amazing cooking – if you want to experience Caribbean food like this again, get him to cater your next event!

The Energi People team – thanks everyone for helping drum up raffle prizes, spreading the word, turning up on the night and supporting me. Special thanks to Jemma Kittle for helping behind the scenes.

Thanks to everyone who has donated – finally I would like to thank everyone who has donated to our fundraising page. As well as donating the entire ticket price for the One Love event to the British Red Cross, we have also received some very generous donations from companies and individuals who were unable to attend. At the last count we have raised £1,661.44, over 80% of our target.

It would be great if we could get to £2,000 by the end of the year, so if you would like to donate it’s not too late. Donate here!

After several very intense weeks organising this event and also visiting the Caribbean, it’s back to work as normal for me. If you are looking for opportunities in the region or have a recruitment requirement please get in touch. It’s business as normal for most of the Caribbean Islands, and there is work in the construction and engineering industry for the right candidates.
