Senior Power Systems Engineer
Be an Expert in Power Systems Analysis
Are you an experienced Power Systems Engineer with expertise in performing comprehensive and dynamic EMT power system studies? We are looking for a Senior Engineer to dive deep into booming data centres, renewables, or BESS substation projects that support the energy transition and net-zero goals.
The Role
As a Senior Power Systems Engineer, you will work closely with substation design engineers for plant and grid substation projects, from concept through detailed design to delivery. Collaborating with our multidisciplinary teams, you will deliver studies to support the design of substations and ensure compliance with distribution or transmission codes, focusing on projects from 33kV to 400kV.
You will lead power system studies focusing on EMT studies, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate with the electrical lead to ensure simulations and designs meet regulatory standards and project goals.
Responsibilities
Modelling and Analysis:

Load flow analysis
-
Short circuit analysis (IEC 60909/Comprehensive)

Protection grading/coordination
-
Dynamic modelling and analysis (load and generation impact)
-
EMT modelling and studies (inrush, insulation coordination, lightning protection)
Compliance Studies:
-
Voltage fluctuation studies, P28
-
Harmonic assessment, G5/5
-
Reactive power capability, FRT and FSM studies, G99 (Type B to D)
-
Transmission Grid Code
Design and Implementation:
-
Underground cable thermal analysis/sizing
-
Protection philosophy
-
Earthing studies and design
-
Produce and review technical deliverables
-
Ensure compliance with UK DNO/TSO standards (e.g., National Grid, SSEN) as well as BS/ENA standards
-
Collaborate across disciplines, including civil, structural, and protection and control, to deliver fully integrated solutions
-
Actively develop and maintain relationships with clients, contractors, and suppliers
-
Support project delivery to meet quality, cost, and schedule requirements, including attending client and site meetings
-
Provide technical ownership to EMT studies and mentoring and coaching to junior engineers
-
Take responsibility for quality assurance and ensure compliance with industry standards and best practices
Key Deliverables

Power System Studies Report and Specifications: Preparing detailed technical reports and specifications following project/DNO/TSO requirements

Protection and Control Philosophy: Contribute to protection philosophy

Site Surveys and Constructability: Perform site visits to assess design feasibility and address constructability issues
The Skills
Essential Skills:
-
Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
-
Chartered Engineer (or working towards chartership)
-
Experience with UK DNO/TSO, BS, ENA standards
-
Intermediate/Expert with EMT analysis software using PSCAD, ATP-EMTP or EMTP-RV
Desirable Skills:
-
Proficiency in Power System analysis software (e.g., DIgSILENT PowerFactory)
-
Experience in Grid compliance studies
-
Experience in IBR or grid forming inverter modelling and tuning within PSCAD
-
Experience in scripting languages like Python or similar for studies automation
-
Previous experience with National Grid / DNO projects
