Why #TogetherWeEngineer Still Matters
International Women in Engineering Day 2025 (INWED) is a global celebration held every 23 June to spotlight the achievements of women engineers and inspire the next generation.
Why are we still banging on about it in 2025?
Because the numbers haven’t budged enough:
- 16.9 % of the UK engineering and tech workforce are women with only 17 % of engineering apprenticeship taken by women (engineeringuk.com)
- In the US, women hold about 16 % of practising engineering roles and earn just 23 % of engineering bachelor’s degrees (nemo.asee.org)
- Firms in the top quartile for board‑level gender balance are 27 % more likely to beat the pack on profits (mckinsey.com)
- By 2030 the global talent shortfall could leave 85 million skilled jobs empty, with engineers top of the list (kornferry.com)
That’s why INWED 2025 is marching under the banner #TogetherWeEngineer – fixing a leaky talent pipeline takes more than a dab of PTFE tape.
What Women add to Engineering (and the bottom line)
Game‑changer | On‑the‑ground impact |
---|---|
Life‑saving materials | Chemist Stephanie Kwolek invented Kevlar – five times stronger than steel and now found in everything from wind‑turbine blades to body armour. |
Sky‑high structures | Structural engineer Roma Agrawal helped design The Shard, pushing London’s skyline – and concrete tech – to new heights. |
Clean‑water solutions | Dr Yewande Akinola designs sustainable water systems on four continents, proving engineering is a public‑health super‑power. |
Bottom line: diversity isn’t a “nice‑to‑have”; it’s a design spec.
Bright spots worth copying
- In the Gulf States women now make up around 60 % of engineering students – a world‑leading share
- UK university applications for engineering are finally climbing, but retention for women aged 35‑44 is sliding (ignore at our peril!)
Three Engineering fixes for a broken system
- Credit on show – visible mentorship, keynote slots and case studies that star your women engineers.
- Pay like you mean it – publish salary bands that survive daylight.
- Design for humans – flexibility, life-friendly policies & spaces for everyone
